Along with making strides in treatments, cancer research has found ways to prevent many forms of it. Although some methods may seem extreme, such as having a double mastectomy to keep from getting breast cancer, others involve preventive measures almost everyone can take.

Actions to Prevent Cancer

Along with getting colon screenings, breast exams, and pap smears, everyone can take these actions to prevent cancer in its many forms.

  1. Avoid All Tobacco

Along with smoking or chewing it, avoid being around others who smoke. Secondhand smoke is just as dangerous as directly inhaling pipe, cigar, or cigarette smoke.

  1. Eat a Healthy Diet

A diet full of foods with saturated fats and red meat can lead to colon cancer. Instead, eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

  1. Slim Down 

Obesity increases the risk of developing many cancers. If you’re overweight, counting calories can remove excess pounds.

  1. Get Regular Exercise

Exercising will help burn excess fat, which can reduce colon cancer and breast cancer risks. It may reduce the risk of reproductive cancers too.

  1. Limit Alcohol Consumption

The risk of mouth cancers, larynx, esophagus, liver, breast cancer, and colon cancers arises when people drink excessively. Add smoking to the mix and the risks increase.

  1. Reduce the Risk of STIs

Some sexually transmitted infections can lead to cancer. They include HIV, human papillomavirus, and hepatitis. Cancer also develops by sharing needles.

  1. Get Quality Sleep

Although the link between sleeping poorly and cancer isn’t strong, not sleeping well can cause weight gain. Obesity has links to many cancers, but avoid the risks by getting more sleep.

  1. Increase Vitamin D

The recommended amount of vitamin D is 800 to 1,000 IUs a day, so take supplements to reach that goal. Vitamin D can reduce the risk of colon and prostate cancers.

Although the evidence of cancer prevention isn’t always a strong one, these preventives are easy to do and may help people stay cancer-free and increase their overall health.
